The members of our academic community announce with immense sadness the untimely passing of our colleague, Sébastien Van Drooghenbroeck, coordinator of the Belgian section and one of the most dedicated members of our Network.
Distinguished full professor and honorary vice-rector at Saint-Louis University in Brussels — his alma mater, where he also served as vice-rector and dean of the Faculty of Law – ; honorary pro-rectorat the Catholic University of Louvain; assessor of the Belgian Council of State and renowned government expert on human rights and discrimination legislation, Sébastien Van Drooghenbroeck was a passionate researcher and a brilliant professional in constitutional and human rights law. The choice of these two major branches of law which refer to the deep values and fundamental principles underpinning the democratic architecture of human justice fully reflects the profound nature and the love of truth and integrity that characterized him.
Sébastien was a major contributor to the development the Academic Network on the European Social Charter and Social Rights (ANESC) since the yearly years of its activity. Co-founder and co-coordinator of the Belgian section since 2014, he diligently took on his role from the outset, working with the discreet tenacity and passionate dedication that characterized his actions.
Under his coordination, the Belgian section organized the memorable 2016 symposium (which resulted in a 444-page volume « Europees Sociaal Handvest, sociale rechten en grondrechten op de werkvloer. Charte sociale européenne, droits sociaux et droits fondamentaux au travail », published by De Keure in the same year) and was involved through the contribution of several of its members, including Sébastien, in the drafting of the Commentary on the Social Charter. Sébastien was also, along with other colleagues from the Network, co-coordinator of volume 3 of the Commentary.
Finally, it should be mentioned that ANESC owes Sébastien one of its most important and successful projects: the Moot Court on the European Social Charter. The initiative for a mock trial competition as a way of promoting the Charter among students belonged entirely to Sébastien, and the first edition of the competition was organized under his efficient and creative coordination. Now in its fifth edition next year, the competition has earned a well-deserved reputation among all its participants as a vibrant and challenging event, just like the spirit of its late founder.
But beyond all these remarkable professional achievements, Sébastien will remain first and foremost in our hearts and memories as the possessor of those much rarer qualities that characterize truly great spirits and ensure their path into the Light: genuine modesty and discreet warmth, a subtle and kind sense of humour, and a vibrant and ever-youthful spirit.
Our thoughts and prayers are with his beloved family, together with whom we will share for ever his dear memory.

Chers membres de la section belge du Réseau académique sur la Charte sociale européenne et les droits sociaux,
Hier soir, j’ai malheureusement appris la très triste nouvelle du décès de notre très cher collègue Sébastien Van Drooghenbroeck, survenu hier matin.
Sébastien a été dès le début la figure centrale de notre section, créée à l’automne 2014. La première réunion au cours de laquelle la création de notre section a été discutée, ainsi que toutes les réunions suivantes, se sont tenues dans la salle du conseil de l’avenue du Jardin botanique. Beaucoup d’entre nous ont eu du mal à trouver la salle, mais nous y avons toujours été chaleureusement accueillis par Sébastien qui emmenait ceux et celles qui arrivaient un peu plus tôt, pour prendre un café avant la réunion. Dans la salle de réunion, il nous offrait toujours des biscuits Delacre.
Il n’est donc pas surprenant que Sébastien soit devenu le premier président officieux de notre section. Il ne se considérait pas comme tel, mais assumait toutes les tâches de coordinateur. Sous sa houlette, la section a pris un excellent départ. Beaucoup d’entre nous ont contribué au succès d’une journée d’étude organisée par notre section. Les exposés ont été rassemblés dans l’ouvrage de 444 pages intitulé « Europees Sociaal Handvest, sociale rechten en grondrechten op de werkvloer. Charte sociale européenne, droits sociaux et droits fondamentaux au travail », publié par De Keure en 2016.
En tant que coordinateur de notre section, Sébastien a également participé aux activités du réseau même. Outre les réunions que cela impliquait, il a également contribué au projet commun consistant à réaliser un commentaire article par article de la Charte et de tous les protocoles et règlements qui s’y rapportent. Quatre des huit volumes ont déjà été publiés et Sébastien a été, avec d’autres collègues, l’éditeur du troisième volume.
Mais plus encore, il a créé le concours de plaidoiries fictives, organisé pour la cinquième fois cette année par le réseau. Il en a rédigé le règlement et a certainement contribué à la description du cas fictif présenté aux équipes participantes lors du premier concours, impliquant des employés des États fictifs d’Orvalistan et de Duvelistan.
Nous perdons non seulement le moteur de notre section, mais surtout un ami très généreux. Nos pensées et notre soutien vont à sa famille et aux membres de notre section qui ont travaillé en étroite collaboration avec Sébastien à son université.
